Transferring, Buying or Selling a Property with a Rooftop Solar System
Important information for current and prospective property owners and realtors
The purchase or transfer of a property with a rooftop solar system (or other on-site renewable resource) requires an update to the interconnection agreement. This agreement serves as a contract between the utility, the property owner ("customer-generator") and, if applicable, the leasing company ("owner-operator").
The agreement outlines the terms and conditions for operation and maintenance of the privately-owned system to maintain connection to the grid in accordance with program and regulatory rules and requirements.
As the new owner of a property with an installed solar system subject to an agreement referenced above, we want to make sure you continue to enjoy the full benefits of the previous owner's enrolled program.
Therefore, new property owners (or their legal representatives in the case of a business, entity or trust) should download, sign and return with supporting documentation the Distributed Energy Resources Assumption Agreement Form. In doing so, you will assume all the rights and responsibilities of the previous owner's existing agreement allowing you to remain enrolled in that program.
If your rooftop solar system is leased and the leasing company has not assigned, sold or otherwise transferred the lease of your rooftop solar system, you do not need to have them sign the Assumption Agreement Form; however, we need to know if the lease was assigned, purchased or otherwise transferred to you.
If the lease of your rooftop solar system has changed hands, the new leasing company must also complete an Assumption Agreement Form.
When you send the Assumption Agreement Form back to us, please include the appropriate supporting documentation, including a copy of the deed showing the change in ownership, as well as a copy of the lease buy-out or transfer, if applicable.
We know that new property ownership (even if it is just a transfer) can be stressful, so we are here to help you with any questions or concerns that you may have about this process. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
