Would you be willing to support demonstration projects in public schools to help integrate increased amounts of renewable energy into modern electric grids in Hawaii?

Would you like to help Hawaii's youth learn more about emerging renewable energy and smart grid technologies?

That's what the Hawaiian Electric Companies’ Smart Power for Schools program is all about.

Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric, and Hawaii Electric Light provide monetary and in-kind support to demonstrate renewable energy and smart grid technologies at selected public schools on Oahu, in Maui County, and on Hawaii Island. This support, along with voluntary donations from the community, funds the purchase, installation, operation, and maintenance of renewable energy systems. After a two-year period, the systems are operated and maintained by the State of Hawaii Department of Education.

In addition to demonstrating emerging technologies, the Smart Power for Schools program promotes classroom education on renewable energy generation and smart energy management strategies through interactive, energy management Web portals.

How Are The Schools Chosen?

The Hawaii Department of Education chooses schools based on a commitment to include renewable energy education in the classroom. School buildings must also meet structural and environmental requirements for the system and be in locations that can benefit the most from available renewable energy resources and solutions for the integration of increased amounts of renewable energy into the electric grid.

Why Are We Asking For Support?

We are asking for your support in order to continue the program, thereby diversifying and upgrading renewable energy systems installed at public schools, improving the methods by which the systems feed excess amounts of renewable energy into the grid, and expanding opportunities for education on renewable energy and smart grid technologies. For the benefit of Hawaii’s students and interested individuals, these systems serve as working models that demonstrate renewable energy production, energy management and efficiency strategies, and smart grid integration.
