Locational Value Maps

Welcome to the Locational Value Maps (LVM) for Oahu, Maui County and Hawaii Island

Locational Value Maps can help when planning customer-sited generation, also called Distributed Generation (DG). The maps provide an indication of the percentage of DG on the utilities' distribution circuits. Please see the Locational Value Maps below.

Our goal is to help get as much customer-sited generation, especially renewable energy, as possible while maintaining reliable service to all customers. Reliable service may be impacted if a circuit has too much DG interconnected without proper protection equipment.


DG may include:

  • Solar, wind, hydro or biomass renewable generation for Net Energy Metering (NEM), Feed-In Tariff (FIT) or a Standard Interconnection Agreement (SIA), or
  • Non-renewable generation for a Standard Interconnection Agreement (SIA).

Important:

  • DG percentages on the LVM shown are based on installed systems and accepted interconnections.
  • LVMs are rough guides, updated regularly, but can quickly get out of date. You may also ask us for a preliminary circuit check that may provide more up-to-date information. A LVM address search or a preliminary circuit check from your utility do NOT reserve a place in line for your system nor do they guarantee no further engineering reviews will be needed when you submit your application for utility review.

No limits are set on the amount of DG on a circuit. However, to ensure safe and reliable service, all applications to connect to the utility grid go through an initial review process. Generally, if DG penetration on a circuit is less than 15% of peak load, your system may qualify for Simplified Interconnection. If penetration is 15% or greater, your application may need further review.

The Percent Hosting Capacity Available Map shows circuits with percentage (%) available on the circuit based on a hosting capacity circuit limit. Hosting capacity refers to the amount of distributed energy resources that a power distribution system can reliably “host”. Depending on the % available, an interconnection study and upgrades may be necessary. Any circuits noted in red on the map will most likely require an interconnection study.

The Percent of Circuit Peak Load Map shows distributed generation (mostly solar photovoltaic, or PV) on each circuit compared to 15% of peak electricity demand, or "load" on each circuit. It also shows levels beyond 15%. The Public Utilities Commission requires that we use 15% as the first checkpoint to consider whether more distributed generation can be added on a circuit safely and reliably or if additional study may be needed. If the map shows distributed generation on a circuit is below 15% of peak demand as of today, further study typically will not be needed. However, the amount of distributed generation on a circuit can change, sometimes quickly.
